From Rosetta Code

Use of IRC

[05:49am] <Vera> Hello again :) I've got two problems I can't solve - could you help me please.
[06:16am] <Vera> a chat-room of no reply - what' the use of it then ?

I've seen you on IRC twice, and both times you've arrived and left within a half-hour while nobody else is around. Particularly, when you arrive it's early morning just before I wake up, for me. Rosetta Code, just like many other projects, is not a massively-staffed 24/7 operation. Other people aren't watching for questions constantly. Just like any IRC channel, it's a good idea to join and stay there for a while to see when people are active.

Also, if you have a question, then ask it — don't ask “can you help me” — ask your actual question so that when someone else notices they can give a useful answer. If nobody knows what the topic of your question is then they're less likely to reply even if they are paying attention, because they can't tell whether they are able to help you.

If you don't have a setup where you can just leave #rosettacode open in the background and keep an occasional eye on it, then perhaps IRC is not the medium for you, and you'd be better off using Rosetta Code:Village Pump which is asynchronous.

I hope this information helps you get your problems solved.

If we're going to use the Pump as a programmer's Q/A, it might be a good idea to use actual forum software for it instead of MediaWiki. I've tried that before, but the site wasn't active enough to make its software maintenance worthwhile, and the Pump still doesn't seem active enough for that purpose. While it wasn't the purpose I really had in mind for it, the Rosetta Code subreddit might be a good place for something like that. --Michael Mol 16:24, 25 February 2010 (UTC)
Vera sent me their questions via email; they were about how to participate in RC, not programming. —Kevin Reid 16:37, 25 February 2010 (UTC)

Vera, I'm @shortcircuit in #rosettacode. Most of what goes on in there is short-term discussion of maintenance, and occasionally discussion about tasks and features I'm pondering adding to Rosetta Code. As Kevin suggests, you should probably try an asynchronous communications medium. The Rosetta Code subreddit might eventually be a good place for it, but I don't think a lot of people use it or know about it yet. You might also find Stack Overflow to be a good place for Q/A, depending on your problem. --Michael Mol 16:24, 25 February 2010 (UTC)

Hello Michael,

thanks for your suggestions. Took me a while to realise that 'Pump' is the Nick for 'Village Pump' <laughing afterwards> and what Rosetta Code subreddit is about. I only caught a small glimpse of it and it looks inspiring so I'll revisit it again on another occasion (with more time).

At the moment I'll try to learn how wiki works, as being part of it is totally new to me. Like the question: Do I answer to you here by editing my user talk, adding new section or do I use your name-link to reply? (I'll see in a minute ;) )

Well, as for questions on programming I'm very good supported by the PureBasic forums.

Next time I'll come to the chat - I'll bring along more time.

cheers ~ Vera

ps: none of my ideas work and there's no reply-button - I'll have to paste it in manually

bit later: Thanks Kevin ~ for that hint <twinkle> --Vera 18:02, 25 February 2010 (UTC)

Some people put replies on other participants' talk pages, others (like me) put replies wherever they see the discussion. I can think of arguments in favor of each approach. There is no policy on this point. --Michael Mol 18:56, 25 February 2010 (UTC)

A bit more general welcome

Welcome to Rosetta Code! I'm Mike, and I noticed you created an account.

Some quick things you should be aware of:

Template:Mylang Helps you show what languages you're familiar with, and helps us become aware of skills with languages we haven't seen.
Category:Unimplemented tasks by language A place to find tasks missing solutions in various languages.
Blogs, twitter, facebook... We have them, and are interested in yours.
Special:Webchat Logs you into #rosettacode on the Freenode IRC channel. Not usually the most active communications medium, but occasionally helpful. It's logged at http://irclog.perlgeek.de/rosettacode/today.
Rosetta Code:Village Pump A general Q/A and discussion area.
Rosetta Code:Finances For most of Rosetta Code's history, expenses have been paid out of my pocket. I can't afford that much longer, and so you can see the state of Rosetta Code's finances, and how you may help. If you enjoy or are excited about the site, please consider reading through it.

Sorry for the boilerplate; it can be a bit difficult giving an individual greeting to each person. If you post information about your technical interests and background, I'll probably read it. If you already have put that kind of information on your user page, I probably already have; I'm always interested in how people do and can benefit from Rosetta Code. --Michael Mol 04:52, 27 February 2010 (UTC)

Dear Mike - thanks for that 'official' welcome  :) . Getting to know the Wiki bit by bit I start realizing how much effort you (Kevin and ???) have to take to keep an eye on all the changes and care about big and small concerns - and how quickly you jump in to help. cheers --Vera 11:36, 1 March 2010 (UTC)
Ech. There are so many people that put a lot of effort in, that I decided a long time ago it would be socially dangerous to try to list them all. There are a fair number, though. --Michael Mol 14:34, 1 March 2010 (UTC)

Hallo :-)

Hallo Vera,

PureBASIC

As Kevin surmised, I ran a spider when I logged in. It was an accident, reverted about 500 edits, and so I restored the database again this afternoon. Sunday's edits should be back. I can't do anything about edits that were made today. --Michael Mol 18:46, 7 March 2010 (UTC)

Dear Michael - that must have been Boris [1]  ;) - thanks for setting things right again and I hope you didn't have too much trouble moving to the new server and enjoy the proceeding growth of your fine project. --Vera 22:45, 7 March 2010 (UTC)

Hello Kevin, as todays post are gone I still like to say:

  • thanks for your response and explanations that relieved me (and at least three more people who got a bit worried too). I read it earlier but couldn't answer 'til now and now I find that everything seems to be put into place again. joyful regards ~ --Vera 23:04, 7 March 2010 (UTC)

Concerning double headers

I received your message:

Hello Demivec, looks like one cannot have twice the same header on one task-page, as the following entry in the row seems to be removed automatically. But if both solutions are valuable in itself, one could add a further one as alternativ way and point out the reason when it's of advantage. What do you think? --Vera 19:25, 8 March 2010 (UTC)

I can only guess at what you are referring to, but I think I'll guess right. I was editing the task page for 'Memory Allocation' and when I submitted my changes it became apparent that Marcos had also edited the page at the same time and had completed his revisions before I did. This left the task page with two 'PureBasic' headers. It took me a few tries to accomplish but I managed to delete my contribution and to edit his contribution to include portions of mine. If you are referring to something else please let me know. --Demivec 21:17, 8 March 2010 (UTC)

Yes you guessed right. We've been online at the same time, so I saw what happened and thought I'd reached you straight away. I wondered if you would have liked to include an alternative solution, that's why I asked. Fortunately Michael read it and suggested a way how this could be handled currently or for future cases - that's good to know. --Vera 09:48, 9 March 2010 (UTC)
