Talk:Find square difference

From Rosetta Code

New Title

Maybe rename the task to something like 'Find square difference'? I think 'Least square' may get confused with the Least Squares data fitting method. Garbanzo (talk) 08:08, 21 November 2021 (UTC)
I have done it, thanks. --Forever Ring Programming Language! (talk) 10:46, 21 November 2021 (UTC)

The Demise of RC?

Perhaps this question reflects someone's sense of humor or enthusiasm for "Code Golf", but it could also be the work of a discontented spammer. Whichever which way, it does not bode well for RC's future, especially since it has been answered multiple times. Does that mean it's too late to delete it? What is the most effective way to flag a question as deleterious to the well-being of RC?

There probably is or should be a suitable template, but I am not qualified to answer that, sorry.
While I agree this might take the crown of "most banal task on RC", it could perhaps be salvaged along the lines of an extra credit to solve a general equation provided in string format, eg "n^2 - (n-1)^2 > 1000", however without quite a bit of careful thought and express limitations that could easily go the other way and make it far too difficult. --Pete Lomax (talk) 10:39, 9 December 2021 (UTC)
  • The author is not a troll or a spammer, just someone very enthusiastic about boring, trivial tasks with vague names and unhelpful descriptions. I agree that these dreary bits of busywork do nothing to promote RC's goal of showing how various different languages do things. I would not be against severely trimming the collection, even ones that have already collected several answers. Thebigh (talk) 11:20, 9 December 2021 (UTC)

Creating a new page focused on symbolic algebra or the resolution of declarative constraints would be great, but would that solve the problem of what to do with this page?

It turns out it’s possible to create pages with a colon in the name, e.g. Code_Golf:_Code_Golf, so one option seems to be to make this a Code Golf task, and move the page accordingly. This seems to me vastly preferable to simply adding a tag,

When submitting the initial 'one line' Wren solution, I fully expected Thundergnat to delete this task but he didn't, possibly because Util had submitted a Raku solution. Anyway, I can't see it being deleted now with 21 solutions some of which are quite lengthy. Incidentally, if the 'Code Golf' task is intended to be serious, it's not that easy to come up with something short. Thundergnat may want to change the title though because of the task capitalization policy. --PureFox (talk) 16:30, 9 December 2021 (UTC)

Oh, apparently (and that entry and output has not changed since first posted), we have all been doing it wrong, and showing the least number instead of the latest number. Changes maybe that things does, earlier sooner than beforeways, in transit missus ooh err Frankie Howard! --Pete Lomax (talk) 16:08, 10 December 2021 (UTC)
