From Rosetta Code

Older Perl compatibility

Do you really want to do that? The idea is to show off your language to its best. --Paddy3118 (talk) 08:51, 2 August 2014 (UTC)

I understand what you mean but imagine this: some Perl beginner is trying to copy&paste this code but sadly it doesn't work because he/she has previous version of Perl installed. It may be difficult to translate given/when to if/elsif/else. Some people only use Perl versions bundled with other software and in most cases these are not the most recent ones. Though I have to admit you're right. As I'm pretty new here I think it is not me who should decide about acceptance Eegg (talk) 14:38, 2 August 2014 (UTC)
Hi EEgg, an alternative is to leave the current one that works for the most up-to-date Perl 5, then add a version that works for previous versions or state what features need to change for earlier versions. We like to show off the best /most idiomatic. If the Perl5 guys have lately added new features then it would be best to keep them and just add a note (if you must) about compatibility.
Oh, and welcome to RC :-)
