Chess960, a.k.a. Fischer Random Chess, Chess 9LX, is a chess variant invented by Bobby Fischer in which the initial placement of the pieces behind the pawns is randomized at the start of the game. There are two tasks for dealing with these random placements, either to generate one (possibly from a standard index number) or to derive said standard index number from a given position.
