it seems there is no formal definition of S-Expressions, and much of the arguments in the discussion on this task seems to revolve around what is required for S-Expressions and what is not.
this [http://people.csail.mit.edu/rivest/Sexp.txt draft RFC] makes an attempt at a definition, but it was not accepted for reasons that are unknown.
