:letters of the English alphabet. Things get tricky with German Umlaute (äöüÄÖÜß) not to speak of Scandinavian alphabets

One could ask for a list of characters showing the desired sort order (ol)
and turn a>=b into pos(a,ol)>=pos(b,ol).
