Talk:Longest string challenge: Difference between revisions

Line 85:

:::: Since I don't know J, I really can't say and I can't really understand how they are nonsensical. I have to take your word on that. But I'm curious and would like to understand more. Beyond that I think the applicability of the task should be discussed in one place. It's starting to fragment. --[[User:Dgamey|Dgamey]] 19:02, 14 August 2011 (UTC)

::::: Ok, here is my attempt at helping you to understand more:
::::: Part 1: J has only one data type: array. So any part of a task having to do with data types has to be interpreted liberally. Meanwhile, a list is a kind of array. Strings are are a kind of list. So what does the restriction against lists mean? Is it a prohibition on arrays? Is the point to eliminate J's core design concepts?
::::: Part 2: what is a "comparison operator"? (I have no clue what is being restricted here.)
::::: Part 3: what is a data type? (See part 1). --[[User:Rdm|Rdm]] 20:16, 14 August 2011 (UTC)
