: I believe what Walter is saying is that his German keyboard and/or code page don't support those characters in the same way as they don't support other characters commonly found on a US keyboard (like the $ character). As I remember this is the reason that !, ? and _ were introduced as symbols and $, @ and # were deprecated. [Ref.
