BSD is a generic name which describes several operating systems, including FreeBSD, OpenBSD, NetBSD, and several others. All BSD operating systems are code-descended from the Berkeley Software Distribution version of the UNIX operating system, which is itself descended from Bell Labs' original UNIX.
