Bell Labs is a research and development facility which originated as a jointly owned laboratory between AT&T and Western Electric. The facility is credited with the invention and/or development of transistors, lasers, UNIX, Plan 9, wireless internet, UTF-8, and C (among many other important technologies). Work from Bell Labs has also won six Nobel Prizes (all in physics).
